THE RUNDOWN
The Patriots won for the second straight time, taking down UT Permian Basin (3-4-3, 1-2-1 LSC) by a score of 3-1 Wednesday night at Patriot Field. A DBU squad that's been turning a corner since the calendar changed to October took its next step tonight, as Peyton Voelker scored twice and the defense became the first to hold UTPB leading scorer, Gustavo Barroso, without a shot attempt. With the win, the Patriots move to .500 (4-4-4, 3-1 LSC) on the year and climb within one point of the Lone Star Conference lead.Â
Fouls were called early and often on Wednesday night. The Falcons were smacked with four yellow cards in the first 15 minutes of the match. But Jess Jobe's team stayed disciplined while tremendous play from the backline bought the Patriots all the time they needed to manufacture the go-ahead goal.Â
The goal arrived in the 14th minute when a foul in the box gave Peyton Voelker a penalty kick against UTPB goalkeeper Kristian Hovind. Voelker did not waste the golden opportunity, punching one into the back of the net for his first goal of the game. Trailing 1-0, the Falcons feverishly hunted for the game-tying goal throughout the half. The visiting team would push the Patriots back on their heels as halftime approached. But the DBU defense swarmed UTPB star Gustavo Barroso every time he touched the ball and went on to stomach a game-high eight shots from Alberto Romano.Â
DBU doubled up its lead quickly in the second half. In the 54th minute, Hovind swatted away a shot from Ethan Unger but failed to corral it before Leo Larson rammed it home for his first goal as a Patriot. Voelker slammed the door on the Falcons with his second goal in the 66th minute.Â
The Falcons did finally push one across Alexander Knepper a few moments later. But DBU's two-goal edge and a sea of yellow cards sent UTPB home in disarray.Â
