THE RUNDOWN
The Lady Patriots (17-3, 8-1) edged out the Eagles of Oklahoma Christian (12-8, 3-4) on Wednesday night in Edmond, Oklahoma. DBU has topped its opponent in eight straight matches, dropping only four sets over that stretch. Â
Â
The match started tight with both squads trading points through the first act of set one, and neither team pull ahead by more than 3 through the first 32 points. With the score locked at 16, Oklahoma Christian finished the frame on a 9-1 run to claim it. DBU allowed a season-worst .458 opponent hitting percentage in the set while hitting at its lowest rate (.028) since the 4th set against Arkansas–Fort Smith on September 9. The first-set loss also broke a streak of 11 consecutive sets won by the Lady Patriots.
Â
The beginning of set two felt eerily similar to the first as both teams struggled to take a significant advantage. Tied at 9-9, DBU won 10 of the next 12 rallies to go up, 19-11. The Eagles threatened late, but the Lady Patriots rebounded from the previous set with a .462 hitting mark and took the frame.
Â
The third was about as close as they come. Trailing 11-7, the largest margin of the set, Oklahoma Christian fought to knot the game at 14. With the Lady Patriots a point away from seizing the frame, the Eagles forced deuce play, but an OC attack error gave way to a DBU 2-1 set lead.
Â
The momentum carried into set four for the Lady Patriots. DBU jumped ahead, 15-6, but the Eagles responded with a quick, 4-0 run.
Jordan Fish rallied her athletes, and they found their rhythm again to go up by nine. OC threatened again late in the set, but the Lady Patriots crossed the finish line ahead of the Eagles.
