THE RUNDOWN
A program-record 43 shots created the only one that mattered, a
Joeli Benson goal in the 63rd minute that lifted DBU to a 1-0 win over Eastern New Mexico. With Saturday's win at Patriot Field, DBU climbs to 11-1-1 on the year (7-1-1 LSC) for coach
Marcus Wood's 398th career win. DBU has now won four straight entering the final stretch of the regular season and holds a three-point lead over the rest of the LSC.Â
The DBU offense was opportunistic and eager on Saturday, blasting Eastern New Mexico (4-9-1, 2-6-1 LSC) with 43 shot attempts that kept the Greyhounds anchored down on defense. ENMU goalkeeper Samantha Jeffries swatted away shots left and right, withstanding 35 strikes before the Patriots cracked open the net in the second half.Â
An anemic Greyhounds offense that mustered just two shots all day was buried underneath the game's only goal in the 63rd minute.
Angelina Olmos got things started when she darted a pass over to
Michelle Gonzalez "Marta" from the left side of the net. Marta wasted no time making the unselfish play, whipping the game-winning assist over to
Joeli Benson for the first goal of her young career. The Patriots spent the rest of the match earnestly searching for the insurance score before collecting the 1-0 win.Â
