THE RUNDOWN
An Angelina Olmos goal in the 89th minute pushed the top-ranked Patriots past Texas A&M International by a score of 2-1 on Saturday. With 37 seconds remaining in the match, Haley Roberson fed Olmos the go-ahead goal for the 400th win of Head Coach Marcus Wood's career. Wood now enters rarefied air, becoming just the 30th coach in NCAA history to join the 400-win club. The last-minute heroics drive the Patriots to 13-1-1 (9-1-1 LSC) on the year and coach Wood to a career record of 400-45-33, the third-highest win percentage in the history of NCAA soccer.Â
A game DBU dominated on paper seemed destined to end in a draw on Duestdevil Field. The Patriots planted 11 shots on target compared to just one from TAMIU (4-6-6, 1-4-6 LSC). DBU bombarded the Dustdevil defense with nine corner kicks while denying the home team a single shot from the corner. But a season-high nine saves from Dustdevils goalkeeper Fabiana Solano completely erased the offensive edge of the Patriots, and a goal from Krysan St. Louis in the 43rd minute quickly countered a score from DBU's Parker Coe just two minutes earlier.Â
Tied at one goal apiece after intermission, the Patriots stormed out of halftime and into the defending third of the Dustdevils. The offense would outshoot TAMIU 10-4 over the final 45 minutes before finding the bottom-left corner of the net in the 89th minute. The goal was Angelina Olmos' second of the season and marked the first game-winner of her young career. It was also a career day for Haley Roberson, who recorded multiple assists in the same game for the first time as a Patriot.Â
