THE RUNDOWN
DBU claimed the 2022 Lone Star Conference regular-season title with a 3-1 victory over UT Permian Basin (5-8-3, 3-7-2) on Friday. The Patriots (14-1-1, 10-1-1 LSC) end the regular season on a seven-game win streak and secure their fourth consecutive conference championship since joining the Lone Star in 2019.
It was a two-goal day for
Annie Severide, who scored twice on assists from
Haley Roberson. The Patriots challenged UTPB goalkeeper Jenna McEnaney three times in the first 10 minutes and went on to outshoot the Falcons 23-7. DBU also dominated from the corners, outworking UTPB 7-2 on corner kicks and scoring the game's final goal on a set piece from Roberson.
DBU lit up the scoreboard in the 27th minute.
Ella McQuaid rifled a cross that scraped through a pair of Falcons and landed before a sprinting Roberson. Roberson then chopped the go-ahead ball to
Annie Severide, who gathered the pass and punched it inside the left post. The 1-0 lead snowballed into a 2-0 advantage in the 43rd minute when
Madison Parks cashed in on a
Parker Coe header.
DBU took its 2-0 lead into the second half. But the Falcons got a goal back in the 54th minute when UTPB's Laura Perez beat Adriana Schroeder on a penalty kick. But that would be the only time the Falcons found the back of the net on Friday against a stingy DBU defense.
Leading 2-1 and looking for some more insurance, the Patriots again turned to the services of Roberson and Severide in the 61st minute. Roberson boomed a corner kick that found the head of a soaring Severide for a 3-1 goal that snuck under the crossbar. The Falcons managed to put two more shots on frame in the final 30 minutes. But Schroeder would stifle both attempts to preserve the DBU win.
