THE RUNDOWN
DBU earned a gritty 1-0 win on the road against UT Tyler on Saturday. A Peyton Voelker goal in the 84th minute sealed the win and DBU's spot as the No. 2 seed in the Lone Star Conference tournament. The Patriots (7-6-4, 6-3 LSC) will now enjoy a bye to begin the tournament before continuing the greatest season in program history.
The Patriots proved they're not the same team that suffered a 5-1 loss to UT Tyler (7-6-3, 2-5-2 LSC) back in September. The offense was efficient and patient, landing seven of 10 shots on target before Voelker broke through for his league-best 11th goal of the season. In the net, Alexander Knepper earned three saves on nine shots faced for his second consecutive shutout and fourth this year. The Patriots of UTT won the corner kick battle 5-2 but proved unable to capitalize on the advantage, failing to find the back of the net and surrendering their first goal at home since October 12th.
With the match scoreless at halftime, West Texas A&M finalized a 1-0 win over Midwestern State that temporarily moved the Buffs past DBU in the conference standings. When the Patriots took the pitch to start the second half, their only way back into the LSC Semifinals was to win. Storming down the right side of the pitch with six minutes remaining in the match, Christian Naizer shifted the defense with a cross toward the DBU bench. Bruno Correa then reached out and redirected a scorching pass onto the foot of Voelker, who gathered the ball with a defender draped across his back to deliver the game-winning strike.
