Patriots Suffer PK Loss to Midwestern State in LSC Semifinals

THE RUNDOWN
The most incredible season in DBU history ended in a 2-1 PK defeat to Midwestern State in the Lone Star Conference Semifinals. In an inspiring display of resilience, the Patriots stormed back to erase two MSU leads and force a penalty shootout with a trip to the conference championship within reach. Equalizing goals from Jonathan Leach and Ethan Unger helped DBU fight through regulation and two overtime periods to give the Mustangs (12-5-2) all they could handle Friday night in San Antonio, Texas.

The Patriots (7-7-4) controlled possession through the early minutes of the match before the Mustangs turned the tide and landed the first blow in the 23rd minute. After a corner kick, an MSU shot attempt caromed off a huddled mass of traffic and soared through the air above the DBU box. Tristan Adams would keep the play alive and deliver the go-ahead goal to Sulahmana Buh.

Trailing 1-0 after intermission, Gavyn Rosales quickly set the tone by firing off a laser that just missed the goal mouth and ricocheted off the right post. An MSU foul in the 56th minute set the table for a Patriot attack that began to win the possession battle. Positioned near the Patriot bench, Christian Naizer boomed a cross that found the head of Jonathan Leach near the center of the box. Leach then headed a strike that thudded off the pitch and over the arms of diving MSU goalkeeper Adam Braman.

With no winner decided after 100 minutes of action, the weight of double overtime descended upon Sigma Beta Chi Field. The Mustangs struck early in the second overtime period with a goal by Mere Escobar that appeared to spell doom for DBU. But with 30 seconds remaining in the match, Ethan Unger threaded a free kick under the crossbar for one final "never say die" moment that set the stage for the shootout.
