THE RUNDOWN
A Michelle Gonzalez "Marta" goal in the 82nd minute led DBU past Midwestern State Saturday night at Patriot Field. A career-high nine saves from MSU goalkeeper Lexi Jackson gave the Patriots just about everything they could handle before Marta broke the seal off the goal to avoid the draw. The win is DBU's (9-1-1, 5-1-1) sixth straight at home and continues the road woes for Midwestern State (5-6-1, 2-4-1).
There are no easy wins in the Lone Star Conference, and after 82 minutes of action, Saturday's match seemed destined to end in a draw. DBU earned seven corner kicks but could not turn any of them into serious offensive threats against a tightly-packed MSU defense. The Patriots outshot the Mustangs 18-12, landing 10 shots on frame. But DBU's dominance in the attacking third was negated by Lexi Jackson's poise and composure in the net.
The game's lone goal lit up the scoreboard in the 82nd minute, when Marta pulled up off a long dribble to score her second goal in as many games and put a stop to Jackson's career night.
