THE RUNDOWN
The DBU Volleyball team tied a program-record with their 24th win of the season, defeating UAFS 3-2 in a thriller that came down to the wire in the quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament in Canyon, Texas, on Thursday.
AJ Koele led the Lady Patriots with a 19-kill performance and the league's Newcomer and Setter of the Year,
Lauryn Burt, registered 46 assists as DBU (24-5) claimed a 16-14 win in the fifth set to advance to the LSC semifinals.
After claiming victory in the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-15, DBU was unable to close out the match as UAFS (16-13) stormed back to even the match and force a fifth and deciding set.
With momentum swung in favor of the Lions, UAFS opened an 8-2 advantage over the Lady Patriots to open the fifth set. A kill by
AJ Koele put DBU on the comeback trail as the Lady Patriots rallied to score four straight points and cut the deficit to two.
UAFS continued to push for the upset of the tournament's No. 2 seed, scoring three of the next four points to go ahead, 12-8. Down by four points, DBU took advantage of a service error to score the next four points and even the set at 12 apiece.
With two teams trading points to tie the match, 14-14, a kill from
Abby Phillips and an attack error by the Lady Lions Hannah Holland handed DBU a 16-14 win in the final set.
