No. 1 DBU Drops 1-0 Duel to Ninth-Ranked Orediggers in Sweet 16

THE RUNDOWN
DBU's season ends in a 1-0 defeat to No. 9 Colorado School of Mines in the Sweet 16 Round of the NCAA Tournament in Bellingham, Washington. On a day where DBU bested Mines 17-11 in total shots and 9-3 in shots on frame, a goal in the 29th minute from Ellie Putnam is the only stat that mattered. Freshman goalkeeper Sadie Wolf hauled in a season-high nine saves to fend off a ferocious DBU attack and send the Orediggers (18-1-3)  to the National Quarterfinals on Saturday.

It was all DBU for the first half hour of the match. The Patriots strung together numerous attacks that forced Wolf into four early saves. Angelina Olmos had the Orediggers holding their breath with a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that was tipped over the crossbar and a through ball to Annie Severide deep in enemy territory. But a goal against the run of play snatched momentum from the Patriots and put their season on the line by halftime. DBU defended an Orediggers attack in the 29th minute when a deflected shot lingered deep in the box. Mines would intercept the attempted clearance and punch it back into the lower left corner of the net to take the lead.

It would take the Orediggers the full 90 minutes to put away the top team in the country. With seven minutes to play, Annie Severide fired a volley over the heads of three defenders that beat Wolf inside the right post. But the ball scraped the top of the crossbar and came crashing down just outside the net. Angelina Olmos swooped into the unoccupied goal area to tip the ball across but was boxed out by a backline defender to complete one of the most infamous sequences in DBU Soccer history. Rachel Allen rocketed a shot on frame in the 86th minute that Wolf hauled down before DBU's hopes died out on a bottom center shot from Michelle Gonzalez "Marta" that was saved in the 87th minute.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Adrianna Schroeder's Patriot journey comes to an end. The fifth-year goalkeeper walks away with 103 career saves (ties Jenna Ackerly for the fourth most in school history), nine shutouts, and an incredible 31-3-2 record as a starter.
- Marcus Wood guided DBU to a 17-2-1 record in his first year with the Patriots.
- The battle between DBU and Colorado School of Mines is one of the most competitive in the country. The winner has been decided by a single goal or penalty kicks in every meeting since 2016.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
2 - DBU was shut out for the just second time this year.
10 - 10 of this season's 11 starters are eligible to return next season.
3 - Schroeder's 31 career wins are the third most in program history.
