THE RUNDOWN
No. 17 DBU Baseball bounced back to take game three against Wofford by a score of 7-4 Sunday afternoon in Dallas, Texas. Back-to-back solo shots in the fifth and a four-run sixth inning powered the Patriots past the Terriers and avoided the first three-game sweep at Horner Ballpark since 2013. The series finale win bumped DBU to 17-10Â on the year and stopped Wofford (20-9) one game short of the longest win streak in the program's Division I era. Zane Russell earned his second win of the season with one run allowed through 2.1 innings of work.Â
Ryan Johnson started on the bump and cruised through 3.1 scoreless innings before a single swing of Ryan Dorighi's bat defined the first four frames. The Wofford designated hitter belted a three-run shot to left-center field that left the Patriots chasing after another Terrier lead.Â
Trailing 3-0, the DBU bats awoke in the fifth as the Patriots took advantage of a steady wind blowing through left field. Luke Heefner put DBU on the board with a solo shot just over the center field wall that caromed off a chair and back into the field of play. After initially being ruled a triple on the field, the umpire crew overturned the call and ruled it a home run, Heefner's third of the year. Miguel Santos then crushed a 3-2 offering over the wall in left to put the Patriots firmly on the comeback trail. Â
Wofford got a run back in the top of the sixth, but DBU responded with a four-run frame that turned the tide of the game. Blayne Jones set the table with a leadoff double to right-center field. Jace Grady then grounded out to second base to move Jones over to third. Andrew Benefield singled into left, and Ryan Wrobleski drilled an RBI single up the middle to reset the game at 4-4 as the Patriots put runners on the corners and prepared to strike for more.Â
From there, DBU began to pull away. Luke Heefner grounded out to the right side to bring in the go-ahead run. The electric sixth inning concluded with Ryan Wrobleski coming home on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt at third base, bringing Wrobleski in to to make it a 6-4 ballgame.Â
The Terriers would be silenced the rest of the way. Chandler Arnold  entered in the eighth and made quick work of the Wofford order. Miguel Santos continued his big day in the bottom of the inning as the sophomore ripped a triple into right field to complete his three-hit day and drive in the last run of the afternoon.Â
Arnold escaped a first and third jam in the top of the ninth, inducing a fly ball for the final out.Â
