THE RUNDOWN
The Patriots battled A&M International to a 1-1 draw in dramatic fashion Saturday night in Laredo, Texas. Staring into the teeth of a 0-1 loss with five seconds remaining,
Ethan Unger found
Peyton Voelker for the game-timing strike that flipped the script on the match and collapsed a frustrated home team onto the grass at Dustdevils Soccer Field. The dramatic draw moves DBU to 1-1-4 on the year and keeps TAMIU (1-3-3) searching for its first home win of the 2022 campaign.Â
The Dustdevils were staked to a 1-0 advantage nine minutes into the match when Tajani Fairclough found the right foot of Lassana Diakite for the go-ahead goal. But DBU pressed back and threatened with the equalizing goal as halftime approached. In the 43rd minute, Unger challenged TAMIU goalkeeper Robin Verhoeven with a low-flying dart that was just barely deflected off the frame. The attack earned the Patriots a set piece that kept the Dustdevils on the defensive as the first half expired.Â
DBU would outshoot A&M International 6-2 in the second half, hoping to capitalize against a TAMIU squad that's mustered just one second-half goal all season. That hope seemed gone before Unger calmly slid a pass to
Peyton Voelker with 10 seconds to play. DBU's leading scorer then gathered the ball on his left foot and launched a beautiful arcing shot over Verhoeven and under the top post as time expired.Â

HEAD COACH JESS JOBE ON THE GAME
"This is a tough game to summarize. There were two different games to summarize... This was definitely a game of momentum swings and opportunities for us to capitalize when it was swinging in our favor. I felt like we gave up a goal against the run of play but, on the other end, I am extremely proud of the team and they way it continued to fight."
"We felt like the goal was going to come if we stayed committed. We felt that if we continued to push and continued to fight, then eventually, we would find a breakthough. This was a great experience for our team to have, and we are looking forward to getting to play these games for conference points that count. In the meantime, we continue to learn and benefit from these tough games and these tough environments."
