THE RUNDOWN
In a midweek thriller, No. 21 DBU (24-9) defeated Baylor (12-21), 6-5, at Horner Ballpark. An eighth-inning RBI double by
Jace Grady proved to be the difference as the Patriots walked away with their seventh consecutive victory.
Â
Grady led off the DBU offense with a walk in the bottom of the first and came around to score thanks to a wild pitch and a
Nate Rombach single for the game's first run.
Â
The Bears' Hunter Simmons quickly answered in the top of the second with a leadoff home run.Â
Â
Baylor had runners on first and second with one out in the frame, but a double play squelched the offensive momentum.
Â
Kodie Kolden started the next half-inning with a solo shot of his own, and the Patriots loaded the bases shortly after to set up a
Miguel Santos sacrifice fly and give DBU a 3-1 lead.
Â
In the top of the third, the Bears pieced together three hits to tie the game at three, and John Ceccoli added a sacrifice fly to move his team ahead, 4-3.
Â
After Baylor tacked on an additional run in the fifth,
Ethan Mann commenced the home half with a walk and trotted home on a two-run homer off the bat of
Tom Poole that tied the game at 5.
Â
Conner Mackay and
Brady Rose kept the Bears off the board in innings six through eight, facing one more than the minimum.
Â
With one out in the eighth,
Luke Heefner singled to center field on the first pitch he saw. Right behind him,
Jace Grady drove a liner to the left-center gap, scoring the go-ahead run, 6-5.
Â
Kyle Amendt took the mound for the Patriots in the ninth. The righty struck out the first two batters he faced, but the Bears muscled two singles and drew a walk to load the bases.
Â
Simmons stepped up to the plate with two outs and hit a tailing line drive to center field that Grady tracked down to salvage the win for DBU.
