THE RUNDOWN
No. 11 DBU found their offensive stride against Sul Ross State this afternoon, earning a 9-0 win at Lobo Soccer Field. Nine goals scored by six different players led to the Patriots' seventh win of the season.
DBU dominated possession in the first half, limiting the Lobos to just two shots. Of their 14 shots, six resulted in goals scored by five different players. Mckenna Vela contributed the first goal of the match in the 10th minute. Annie Severide's cross found Vela's right foot and went into the net for the Patriots. Vela struck again in the 20th minute when Emily Bates' cross fell into a sea of blue and white jerseys. It was Vela who made contact with the ball last before it went into the goal.
This sparked a flood of goals for the Patriots, with two coming in the next minute and a half. Anne Louthan dribbled the ball down the center of the field and made a shot inside the box to put DBU up 3-0. Less than 90 seconds later, Taylor Tufts was awarded a free kick outside of the box that fell into the top right corner of the goal. A wave of subs for the Patriots followed this set of goals, but the Patriots were not finished offensively. In the 35th minute on their third corner kick of the match, Elise Borders' kick connected with the head of Sophia Schrock for their fifth goal. Two and a half minutes later, Borders was awarded her own goal on a long free kick from midfield that fell just under the crossbar for goal No. 6. The Patriots went into the half with a 6-0 lead.
DBU posted three more goals in the second half, with the first coming after just six minutes. The ball was volleyed around between both teams until it landed on the left foot of Taylor Tufts, who delivered it into the goal for her second goal of the match. Ten minutes later, Kaleigh Naizer was awarded a penalty kick after the Lobos' fifth foul. Her shot found the bottom right of the net for the eighth goal of the match. The game continued to be a physical one as Sul Ross was called for eight more fouls during the game, but this did not stop DBU's offense from continuing to press offensively. In the 78th minute, Sophia Schrock's shot inside the box made it past Lobo goalkeeper Celeste De La Rosa. DBU held onto their 9-goal lead for the remaining 12 minutes, earning their second consecutive win.
