THE RUNDOWN
No. 10 Women's Soccer falls short of the Angelo State Rambelles in a 2-1 final at LeGrand Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon. The Patriots gave up two goals in the first half, but a goal by Hannah Montoya in the 75th minute cut their deficit in half. DBU was unable to find the equalizer in the last 15 minutes, suffering their first loss of the season.
ASU came out hot offensively, finding their first goal in the fourth minute of the match when Sanai Stewart made a shot outside of the box that found the top right corner of the net. DBU's defense reset, hoping to stop any more Belle advances. Senior goalkeeper Breanna Bowen earned an impressive save just before ASU's Madison Maxey scored the second goal for the Belles. Each team's style of play got increasingly more aggressive as the match went on, with 12 fouls and two yellow cards being administered in the final 21 minutes of the half.
After the halftime break, DBU's offensive strategy seemed to shift to a more fast-paced and aggressive approach. The Patriots fired four shots at Rambelle goalkeeper Amber Lockwood before they finally got one past her. After a shot finally reached the back of the net. In the 75th minute, Taylor Tufts made DBU's seventh corner kick that was headed in the box by Anne Louthan. The ball connected with McKenna Vela, who was overtaken by three ASU players. Just before she fell to the ground, Vela flicked the ball to Haley Roberson, who found Angelina Olmos wide open at the top of the box. Olmos made a pass to Hannah Montoya, who was wide open just feet from the goal, and her left-footed shot cut the Patriots' deficit in half.
DBU played quickly in the final 15 minutes, fighting to keep the ball on their attacking half, but ASU's defense intercepted any offensive advances the Patriots made. Haley Roberson made the final equalizing attempt in the last minute of the game, but her shot was caught by ASU's Lockwood.
