THE RUNDOWN
No 18. DBU Baseball used an eight-run 4th inning to claim a 14-4 run-rule victory over the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Tuesday at Horner Ballpark. With the win, the Patriots set a program record with their eighth straight win to start the season.
DBU second baseman
Miguel Santos continued his hot hitting in the bottom of the first as he drove an opposite-field shot over the right-center field wall to put the Patriots up 2-0. DBU would add another in the second as
Ben Tryon reached first on a wild pitch strikeout that allowed
Luke Heefner to score, putting the Patriots up 3-0 after two innings.
Ethan Mann tacked on another in the bottom of the third with an RBI double to expand DBU's lead to 4-0.
Nick Wilson got the start for the Patriots, and he was dominant, working three scoreless innings and allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out six.Â
With Wilson out of the game in the fourth, OSU would use RBI singles from Kollin Ritchie and Ian Daugherty to cut DBU's lead in half and make it 4-2. In that same inning, Cowboys shortstop Lane Forsythe executed a squeeze bunt to make it 4-3.
The Patriots would explode for an eight-run inning in the fourth, powered by three RBI singles and a pair of RBI doubles from
Nathan Humphreys and
Luke Heefner.Â
Grant Jay got in on the action in the bottom of the 5th with a two-run bomb, hit 116 miles per hour off the bat, cleared the wall, and just stayed inside the left-field foul poll to extend the Patriot lead to 14-3.
Oklahoma State would get one back with a solo shot from Ian Daugherty to make the score 14-4.
Luke Pettitte shut the door in the seventh, and the Patriots won 14-4 to earn their second-midweek win of the year over a Big 12 opponent.
