THE RUNDOWN
The No. 17 ranked DBU Patriots (9-3) bulldozed the No. 10 ranked Oklahoma Sooners (11-1) Tuesday night, only needing seven innings to finish the job. Patriot starter Ryan Borberg was electric through his five innings of work; Borberg amassed seven strikeouts across the night and only allowed one hit in his scoreless outing.
Borberg would escape the only Sooner threat of the night in the top of the first, an inning that required 27 pitches. Grant Jay was the first Patriot to reach base and did so with an opposite-field single. Chayton Krauss would later step up with two outs and launch his first home run of the season, giving DBU a 2-0 lead after the first frame.Â
The score would remain 2-0 until the bottom of the third when Krauss launched his second two-run blast of the night to an identical spot beyond the right field wall. Tom Poole drew a four-pitch walk to set the table for the Krauss bomb.
Following a scoreless top of the fourth, the Patriot bats rattled off a five-run inning in the home half, all with two outs. Following two groundouts to begin the inning, Nathan Humphreys doubled down the line to get the party started. Grant Jay was then intentionally walked, Tom Poole smacked a single that drove in Humphreys, and Krauss ripped a two-rbi single that scored Jay and Poole. Michael Dattalo then stepped up and launched his first homer of the year. After four innings, the Patriots led 9-0.Â
Dan Heefner would give the ball to Mason Peters in the top of the sixth, and he was electric out of the pen. Peters struck out three in the top of the frame before Grant Jay launched a two-run shot in the bottom half. Nathan Humphreys singled to set the table for the Jay blast.
Peters was sent back out for the seventh, and he struck out two in a three-up, three-down inning to seal the win.Â
Tonight marked the program's largest margin of victory over a ranked opponent since the Patriots beat #22 Sam Houston by a score of 21-3 on 3/24/18.
