THE RUNDOWN
The No. 5-ranked DBU Women's Soccer team opened Lone Star Conference play in dominant fashion, securing a 2-0 victory over Angelo State on Wednesday night at Patriot Soccer Field in Dallas. The Patriots wasted little time, striking twice in the first 22 minutes behind goals from
Skylar Belanger and
Angelina Olmos, before their defense shut down the Rambelles' attack and limited ASU to just three total shots.
After a scoreless opening stretch, DBU broke through in the 18th minute on a set-piece opportunity. Following an entry pass on the Patriots' corner kick, Syndey Hopper found Belanger, who fired a left-footed strike from just inside 30 yards that glanced off the right post and ricocheted across the goal line for the night's first score.
Just four minutes later, the Patriots doubled their lead.
Chandler Wheat created space on the right wing and served a pinpoint cross into the box, where Olmos rose above her defender and buried a header into the back of the net to put DBU firmly in control.
The Patriots carried their 2-0 cushion into halftime, then dominated possession the rest of the way. DBU outshot Angelo State 14-1 in the second half, leaving little doubt as they snapped a three-match skid to the Rambelles and picked up three points in the LSC standings.
