Wells Dazzles in DBU's Sweep of Colorado Mesa

THE RUNDOWN
Friday morning, DBU (2-0, 0-0 LSC) took down Colorado Mesa (1-1, 0-0 RMAC) in straight sets, giving the Patriots their second win of the season. All-American outside hitter Karly Wells shined in game one of today's doubleheader, logging 22 kills on 38 attacks. Nobody else on either team recorded more than ten kills this morning. Setters Paityn Winters and Zoe Gun split setting responsibilities right down the middle, both dishing out 20 helpers.

DBU exponentially improved its team-wide hitting percentage as the morning progressed, while the Mavericks went in the opposite direction. In the opening frame, the Patriots rode a .300 hitting percentage to a set one victory, led by Karly Wells' six kills and Lauren Witte's five. Nine of DBU's 25 points in the first set were earned on Colorado Mesa errors, which aided the Patriots early in the game.

Nearly identical to the season opener, set two of this morning's affair featured 11 lead changes, as the two teams struggled to take control. With the frame knotted at 22, the Patriots notched three consecutive points to take the set, taking serious momentum with them into the third frame. DBU posted a team hitting percentage of .429 in the second set, thanks in large part to a whopping eight kills from Wells.

The Patriots jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the third set, with five of those points coming off the right hand of Wells. DBU would go the rest of the frame without surrendering their advantage, eventually winning set three by a score of 25-14, ending the contest. Efficiency on both sides of the ball was the story in the third frame, as the Patriots posted a hitting percentage of .517 and held Mesa to a .192 clip.
