The Dallas Baptist University Lady Patriot Soccer Team improved their record to 3-5-1 for season on Thursday night as they defeated the St. Mary's University Lady Rattlers in a double overtime thriller. With the win, DBU remains undefeated in Heartland Conference play with a conference record of 2-0.
Junior Chelsea Smith scored early for the Lady Patriots when she placed a shot right over St. Mary's goalkeeper to give DBU a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute of action.
Melinda Gentry was able to score for the Lady Rattlers in the 33rd minute to tie the game, ending the first half with the game locked 1-1. Leia Kirch assisted Gentry on the goal.
At the end of regulation, the score remained 1-1, forcing the game into overtime play. Overtime is two 10-minute halves with the golden goal determining the winner.
After a scoreless first overtime period, Sophomore Kourtney Edwards scored the game winning goal for the Lady Patriots in the second minute of the second overtime period. Edward's goal came from a Bales assist.
The Lady Patriots are back in action at Patriot Field on Saturday, September 26 as they host St. Edward's University for a Heartland Conference match-up. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
