The Dallas Baptist University Patriot Baseball Team won both games of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against Western Michigan at Patriot Field. The Patriots won game one by the score of 13-9 and used a walk-off homerun in the second game to win by the score of 4-3. With the series sweep, DBU improves to 6-1 on the season, which WMU falls to 0-3.
Leading DBU at the plate on the day was Junior
Tyler Robbins, who went 6 for 10, with six RBI, including the game winning walk-off homerun in game two.
Freshman
Duncan McAlpine picked up the win in the first game, his first of the season, pitching three and a third innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out four.
In game two, Sophomore
Ryan Behmanesh struck out five batters and allowing only one hit in two innings of work to get the win, also his first of the year.
The Broncos opened up scoring early in the first game as Jamie Simpson hit a two-run homerun in the top of first inning giving Western Michigan a quick 2-0 lead. After a scoreless second, the Broncos pushed one more run across the plate extending their lead to 3-0.
The Patriots answered in the bottom half of the fourth when Junior
Jason Krizan and Senior
Travis Meiners singled. McAlpine followed with a RBI double to left field and Junior
Ryan Thompson added a sacrifice fly to score Meiners, leaving the score 3-2.
After the Broncos scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth, the Patriots answered by putting four runs on the board in the bottom of the inning. Senior
Austin Knight singled and Senior
Ryan Enos followed with a double to set up a two RBI double to left center by Robbins. Meiners added a RBI double and scored on a RBI single by McAlpine to make the score 6-4.
In the sixth inning, WMU added three runs on three hits, but DBU responded with three runs of their own. Enos and Robbins singled to set up a two RBI double by Krizan. Meiners added a RBI single to score Krizan, leaving the score 9-7.
The Broncos managed to push across another run in the top of the seventh, but once again DBU countered, this time with four runs. Thompson and Behmanesh led off the inning with back to back doubles. Robbins added two more RBI on a single and Krizan followed with a RBI to increase the Patriot lead to 13-8.
WMU added one more run in the top of the ninth, leaving the final score 13-9.
In game two, the Broncos scored first, pushing across one run in the top of the second inning on a RBI groundout. WMU added to their lead in the seventh, scoring two unearned runs and taking a late 3-0 lead.
The Patriots were able to get on the board with a solo homerun to left field by Behmanesh in the bottom of the seventh, to make the score 3-1.
In the ninth, Knight walked to start the inning and scored on RBI double by Enos to set up the dramatic victory for the Patriots. Robbins fouled off the first pitch on an attempted bunt, but sent the second pitch over the leftfield bullpen to give DBU a 4-3 walk-off win.
The Patriots are back in action on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Lubbock, Texas, to take on the Texas Tech University Red Raiders at 5:00.
