Cougars No Problem for Patriots

The Dallas Baptist University Patriot Baseball Team opened up their two game series against the Washington State Cougars on Tuesday evening with a 14-5 win. With the win, the Patriots move to 10-6 on the season as they prepare for tomorrow's rematch against the Cougars.

Washington State started off the evening with a two run homerun in the top of the first off the bat of Derek Jones, giving the Cougars a quick, 2-0 lead.

Senior Ryan Enos responded for the Patriots with a triple to right center in the bottom of the first. Junior Tyler Robbins pushed Enos across the plate with his RBI single to make it a 2-1 game. After Robbins advanced to third off of Junior Jason Krizan's double, Senior Travis Meiners earned a RBI with his sacrifice fly to right field, tying the game at two. The Patriots took a 3-2 lead when Krizan scored after Sophomore Ryan Behmanesh reached on a Cougar error.

Starting pitcher, Senior Ryan Millard, gave up one more run in the top of the fourth, on a RBI single by Garry Kuykendall. Millard pitched four innings, giving up three runs on seven hits, and striking out two.

The Patriots added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth, making it a 6-3 lead. Senior Austin Knight singled and advanced to second after Enos' single to right field, and both later scored after when Robbins delivered a three-run homerun over the left field wall.

Washington State added two runs in the top of the fifth, but DBU responded with a RBI single by Knight, scoring Elkins who reached on a double to left field, giving the Patriots a 7-5 lead.

DBU added six more runs in the seventh and one in the eighth for the easy, 14-5 win. Sophomore Ben Palmer got his second win of the season after pitching one inning, giving up two runs on two hits, and striking out two.

The Patriots continue their nine-game homestand tomorrow evening as they welcome the Cougars back to Patriot Field for a 6:30 p.m. start.
