Patriots Defeat SDSU in Slugfest, 12-9

The DBU Patriots improved to 15-11 on the season, after defeating South Dakota State University by the score of 12-9 on Friday evening at Patriot Field. With the loss the Jackrabbits fall to 11-8 on the season.

Leading the Patriots at the plate was Junior Jason Krizan, who finished the game going 4-4 with two homeruns, two doubles and a walk, to end the game with seven RBI.

Sophomore Ben Palmer picked up the win, improving to 3-0 on the season, pitching two and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on five hits.

Junior Jared Stafford picked up the save, his second of the year, allowing zero runs, pitching five innings, scattering three hits and striking out six.

SDSU did not waste any time getting on the board, scoring five runs on five hits in the first inning, taking an early 5-0 lead.

The Patriots responded with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Krizan hit a two-run homerun over the centerfield wall, scoring Junior Tyler Robbins, who had reached on a single. Senior Ryan Enos followed with a solo homerun of his own. Two batters later, Freshman Duncan McAlpine hit the third homerun of the inning, scoring Sophomore Ryan Behmanesh, who had reached after being hit by a pitch, tying the game at 5, after one inning.

In the second inning, the Jackrabbits added two more runs, chasing DBU starter Senior Ryan Millard and taking a 7-5 lead. DBU responded once again, this time scoring four runs. Junior Chris Haney doubled to start the inning and Senior Austin Knight singled and Robbins reached after being hit by a pitch, to load the bases. Haney scored on a balk and Krizan followed with a three-run homerun, his second of the evening, to give DBU the 7-5 lead.

The Patriots added two more runs in the third inning. Knight homered, his sixth of the season and Robbins doubled. Krizan followed with a RBI double and pushing the score to 9-5.

SDSU managed to close the lead to 11-9 in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs on four hits.

In the fifth, Haney doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on a RBI double by Krizan, pushing the score to 12-9.

The Patriots and Jackrabbits will play again on Saturday in doubleheader action beginning at 1:00 at Patriot Field.
