Patriots Blast Lumberjacks with Eighth Inning Rally, 24-11

The Dallas Baptist University Patriot Baseball Team improved to 26-22 for the year on Tuesday night as they defeated Stephen F. Austin at Patriot Field by the score of 24-11. With the loss, the Lumberjacks fall to 32-14 on the year.

Starting pitcher Freshman Will Lane pitched five innings for the Patriots allowing only two runs on seven hits. Junior Chris Haney and Freshmen Stuart Pudenz, Aaron Gilbreath, and Duncan McAlpine all pitched in relief for the Patriots with Pudenz being awarded the win. With the win, Pudenz improves to 1-1 on the season.

Sophomore Ryan Behmanesh led the Patriots at the plate going 3-4 with five RBI's and was a single away from the hitting for the cycle.

DBU jumped out to a quick start in the first inning as they scored two runs. Junior Jason Krizan walked with two outs to bring up Senior Ryan Enos who delivered a double to centerfield scoring Krizan. Enos then scored on a single by Senior Travis Meiners.

SFA responded in the top of the second inning with a solo homerun to leave the score 2-1. The Patriots added a run of their own in the bottom of the second inning when Behmanesh walked with one out and then advanced to second on a single to left field by Junior Logan Moro. Junior Tyler Robbins stepped up to the plate and hit a double to left field to score Behmanesh to extend the Patriot lead, 3-1.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Patriots continued by scoring three runs to make the score 6-1. Behmanesh led off the inning with a triple to centerfield. Moro would reached base on a line drive to the shortstop and would be followed by a walk from Senior Austin Knight, chasing SFA starter Brett Rogers from the game. The offense did not stop with the pitching change, as Robbins hit a double to left field scoring Behmanesh and Moro. Krizan then singled to score Knight, collecting his 50th RBI of the year.

The Lumberjacks tried to get their offense going in the top of the fifth inning, getting two hits in the inning, but DBU starting pitcher Will Lane was able to work out of trouble, giving up only one run to leave the score, 6-2.

The Patriots pushed their lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning off of a wild pitch, which scored McAlpine who reached base on a walk.

SFA mounted a comeback in the top of the sixth inning as they scored five runs on three hits and one error by the Patriot defense to tie the game at 7-7.

DBU quickly responded in the bottom of the inning as Krizan led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a single to the right side by Enos. Meiners walked to load the bases before a walk by McAlpine scored Krizan. Freshman Austin Elkins followed with a sacrifice fly to leftfield scoring Enos. Moro then smashed a three-run homerun to center field, his first of the year, regaining the lead for the Patriots, 12-7.

The Lumberjacks however would not go away quietly as they answered in the top of the seventh inning with four runs of their own to make the score 12-11.

The Patriots responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning, which included a two RBI double by Behmanesh to leave the score, 15-11.

After Freshman reliever Aaron Gilbreath pitched a scoreless eighth inning, the Patriot offense put the game out of reach as they scored nine runs in the bottom of the eighth inning with Enos, Behmanesh, Krizan, and Sophomore Landon each hitting a homerun to leave the score, 24-11.

The Patriots will be back in action Thursday, May 13, at 6:30 pm as they host the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff for a three game weekend series at Patriot Field.
