Patriots Win Third Straight; Defeat Golden Lions 8-5

The Dallas Baptist University Patriot Baseball Team improved to 27-22 for the year on Thursday night, winning their third straight, as they defeated the Golden Lions from the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Patriot Field in Dallas, Texas, 8-5.

Patriot starter Junior Brandon Williamson put in a strong performance on the mound pitching eight innings to pick up the win giving up five runs on 12 hits while striking out seven. Williamson improves to 7-4. Junior Jared Stafford picked up his fourth save on the season as he pitched one inning giving up only one hit.

The Golden Lions scored first, putting together a two-out rally in the bottom of the second inning to take an early 3-0 lead. The Patriots responded in the bottom half of the inning with four runs of their own to take the lead 4-3. Senior Travis Meiners and Junior Chris Haney hit back-to-back singles and Sophomore Landon Anderson reached on a fielder's choice to bring up Senior Austin Knight who would walk to bring in Meiners. Junior Tyler Robbins then stepped up to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Haney. Senior Ryan Enos was later hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in Anderson, collecting his team leading 55th RBI. Knight would later score on a walk by Sophomore Ryan Behmanesh.

The Golden Lions would have an answer in the top of the third inning as Barry McDonley's second hit of the game was a single up the middle scoring Lloyd Burchett to tie the score, 4-4.

Behmanesh would regain the lead for the Patriots in the bottom of the fourth inning, getting his second RBI of the day on a groundout to the pitcher, scoring Junior Jason Krizan who reached on a double to left field.

The Patriots added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Krizan was hit by a pitch and Enos and Behmanesh each followed with a walk to load the bases. Freshman Austin Elkins hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Krizan leaving the score 6-4.

The Patriots would later add two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning off RBI doubles by Meiners and Haney to extend their lead, 8-4.

Arkansas- Pine Bluff would not go away easy as they mounted a ninth inning rally, but could only manage one run as Meiners fielded the final two outs on third base to give the Patriots the 8-5 victory.

The Patriots will be back in action tomorrow for game two of the weekend series against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Game time is set for 6:30 pm at Patriot Field.
