Lady Patriot Volleyball Rallies to Defeat UT-Permian Basin

The Lady Patriot Volleyball Team hosted the Falcons from the University of Texas-Permian Basin on Saturday afternoon. After a rough start that resulted in a 0-2 deficit, the Lady Patriots came charging back to win the next two sets and the tie breaker for their second Heartland Conference win in as many games. DBU is now 6-6 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.

UTPB dominated the opening set, holding the lead through the first 20 points. DBU stayed close but eventually fell, 24-26.

In set two, UTPB took an early 9-3 lead, but the Lady Patriots rallied to pull within four, 19-23, forcing a Falcon timeout. After the short break in play, DBU eventually fell in their second straight set, 20-25.

UTPB led the first 16 points in the third set, before the Lady Patriots came roaring back to tie the game at 17. Running off four straight points, DBU took a 20-17 lead, and finally won, 25-23, to send the game to a fourth set.

It was the Lady Patriots who jumped out early in the fourth, taking an 11-5 lead. At one point, DBU held as much as a nine point lead, before finally winning the set, 25-18.

Continuing where they left off, the Lady Patriots dominated early in the tie breaker, before being forced to call a timeout when UTPB pulled to within one, 10-9. After regrouping, DBU won five of the last six points, sealing the 15-10 win.

Once again, it was Sophomore Becky Swann and Junior Kaylyn Frink leading the way for the Lady Patriots. Swann finished with 14 kills on the night, while Frink ended with 13 kills and a team best, 21 digs. Sophomore Christina Steinkruger was the only other Lady Patriot in double figure kills with 10.

The Lady Patriots will now travel to Wichita Falls on Tuesday, for a rematch against Midwestern State. The Mustangs defeated DBU, 3-1, back on September 7. Tuesday's game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
