DBU Volleyball Wins Thriller Over St. Edward's

The Dallas Baptist University Lady Patriots won a thrilling match against conference foe St. Edward's University on Tuesday night at the Burg Center as they defeated the Lady Hilltoppers, 3-2. With the win, the Lady Patriots improve their overall season record to 8-8, and Heartland Conference record to 3-1.

The Lady Patriots began the night on fire as they took the first set 25-19. DBU continued play with confidence in the second set as they stunned SEU, 25-12. The Lady Patriots hit for a .353 attack percentage in the second set to knock the Lady Hilltoppers back on their hills as they trailed 2-0.

The Lady Hilltoppers were able to rally back from an early 2-0 deficit to tie the match after wins in the third and fourth sets (25-22, 25-16), forcing a fifth and final set.

The two teams were neck and neck as each battled for an edge in the fifth set until the Lady Patriots aggressive play gave them a 5-1 run to end the SEU hopes of a comeback winning, 15-10. With the loss, the Lady Hilltoppers fall to 7-6 on the season, and 3-1 in Heartland Conference play.

DBU was led by Sophomore Christina Steinkruger who had a game high 17 kills as she hit for an impressive .417 average. Junior Kaylyn Frink and Freshman Krystal Wunderlich contributed 10 kills each while Frink had a game high 22 defensive digs. Wunderlich was not far behind with 18 digs of her own.

The Lady Patriots are back in action on Friday, October 1, as they travel to Topeka, Kansas, to compete in the 2010 Lady Blues Classic Tournament hosted by Washburn University. DBU will play a four game round robin against Washburn University, Southwest Baptist University, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and Emporia State University. The Lady Patriots first match will be against the Lady Blues from Washburn on Friday at 2:00 p.m.
