Volleyball Closes 2011 Lady Patriot Classic With Decisive Win

If there was any dissapointment left hanging from the morning game, the Lady Patriot Volleyball Team sure did a great job of hiding it.

With a dominating 3-0 win over Missouri Southern, the Lady Patriots ran their season record to 5-2 and erased any frustration or doubts that might have crept in from a lackluster game against CSU-Pueblo earlier in the day. "The players talked about taking care of things on their side of the court. They were not going to worry about their opponent, what happened yesterday, what might happen tomorrow - they wanted to take care of things on their side," said Head Coach Cathy Ray Kokel after her team's third win in the their last four games.

Tyler Bradsher set the tone for the match early in Game 1 when she served three straight aces to put DBU ahead 5-1. They then rattled off two more points and had a 7-1 lead from which Missouri Southern never recovered. Bradsher helped end the game with an assist to Kristin Secord as the Lady Patriots secured a 25-11 win.

Game 2 was more of the same as DBU had an early 7-3 run that put them up, 14-10, midway through the game. An 11-5 tally from there gave DBU the game, 25-15.

From there, Kristin Secord and Krystal Wunderlich took over in the third game piling up several kills each and leading the Lady Patriots to a 25-20 victory and match sweep. "I thought Secord and Wunderlich were awesome offensively. Between their offense and Ty [Bradsher's] serving, our offense was great tonight. Our goal coming into the tournament was to shore some things up on defense and I thought we did that. We also learned over the course of these four games the adjustments we need to make to be succesful. The team talked this afternoon that they have high expectations for the season and I think we saw a glimpse of those tonight," said Kokel.

The Lady Patriots take the court again September 15 as they travel to Goodwell, Oklahoma to open conference play against Oklahoma Panhandle State University.
