The Dallas Baptist Men's Soccer Team gave No. 9 St. Edward's University everything it could handle Monday afternoon before eventually dropping a 2-0 contest. The setback ends DBU's (3-5, 1-1) winning streak and evens its conference record. SEU (6-1-1, 2-0) pushes its unbeaten streak to seven games.
"Today was a great game by both teams," Head Coach
Chris Crawford stated. "It was a true battle and one of those games you love to be apart of, because both teams showed up and no one wanted to give up anything."
The first half saw the Hilltoppers attempt eight shots, but all fell off the mark with freshman
Mason Stringer protecting the net. The Patriots were in the match with a 0-0 halftime score.
Another slow start to the first 20 minutes of the second half resulted in three combined shots from both teams. Sophomore
Brian Robertson recorded DBU's only shot on goal of the game, and St. Edwards missed two shots off the goal just wide left and high.
Kyle Ruck for SEU finally broke the tie on a header that came from Anderson McDaniel. It was Ruck's second goal of the year and occurred at the 65:46 minute mark.
In the 78
th minute, the Hilltoppers extended the lead off a one timer, 15-yards out, from Ryan Dendinger. Jason Aiken was charged with the assist.
"We knew today would be a test and battle for us and the guys rose to the challenge playing their hearts out," Crawford asserted. "We have made tremendous improvements this season and the guys keep growing."
Stringer (1-1) took the loss after working his second consecutive start. The Burleson, Texas, native allowed two goals on 15 shot attempts from the top 10 ranked opponent.
John Kaschak (6-1-1) earned the victory working his seventh shutout and turning away four DBU shots.
Sophomore
Alex Becerra, and freshmen
Riley Alvey and
Brandon O'Donovan all attempted shots in the tough loss for Dallas Baptist.
DBU did hold Daniel Riley, one of two leading scorers for the Hilltoppers with seven goals, at bay with no goals off four attempts. However, St. Edward's had enough opportunities to remain unblemished overall since dropping the season opener.
The Second year Head Coach continued, "It is a bright future for the Patriots and I know these guys will never be satisfied."
Dallas Baptist opens a six-game home stand beginning Saturday with non-conference foe Ouachita Baptist. Kickoff is slated for 1 pm.
