OPENING TIP – The Dallas Baptist Men's Basketball Team continues its brief two-game road trip to take on Texas A&M-Commerce on Wednesday at 7 pm. The Patriots (1-2) are hoping to even their record at .500 before heading back home for a pair of contests, beginning with a Homecoming showdown versus Mid-American Christian on November 23.
LAST TIME ON COURT – A resilient DBU squad fought hard in its first road match-up at East Central, but would eventually fall 76-67 on the afternoon. The Patriots were outshot 50.9-percent to 44.4-percent and narrowly outrebounded 32-31.
ECU held an early edge jumping out to an 11-2 lead. Dallas Baptist answered with one of its bigger runs of the night going 12-3 to tie the game at 14 with 7:56 remaining in the first half.
Coming out of the locker room trailing 35-25, the Patriots fell behind by as many as 18 points early in the second half, before a 14-4 run would bring the contest to single digits. DBU cut the deficit to six with 1:19 left to play, but would be as close as the road squad could get.
Sophomore
Charles Allen posted a team-high 19 points, and also notched a season-high for the Houston, Texas, native. Classmate
Jonathan Perry was the other Patriot finishing in double-figures with 15.
PERRY LEADS SQUAD – DBU's returning leading scorer is
Jonathan Perry, a sophomore out of Kerrville, Texas, who finished second on the team last season averaging 11.2 points per game (ppg). The lone player in front of him was graduate
Nick Fox, and Perry has since taken on the role expected of him through the duo contests.
The forward is shooting 40.5-percent (17-for-42) through three games, while also reaching game-highs in points the first pair of contests with 28 and 18, respectively. Perry is the only player to score double digits through the trio slate of a young season for DBU.
A large portion of the sophomore's success has occurred at the free throw line, with Perry shooting 25-for-28 to lead to a 89.3 shooting percentage. This includes a perfect 15-for-15 in the season opener versus East Texas Baptist University.
SCOUTING THE LIONS – Texas A&M-Commerce (5-0) enters winners of its last five to tip-off an unblemished campaign so far. Four of the victories happened at neutral sites, with the other coming at home for the Lions. The final in that contest was 92-86.
A&M-Commerce prevailed in its most recent outing, topping St. Edward's 96-87 on Saturday. The Lions shot 50.9-percent (27-53) from the field, including 56.3-percent (9-16) from behind the three-point arc.
Five players scored double-figures for the Lions, led by LaDon Carnegie with a team best 25 points. LaDon also has paced the offense all season tallying 18 points ppg. Devondrick Walker was one shy of matching the team-high with 24 points off the bench. Christian Macauley was the closest to recording a double-double with 12 points and team-high eight rebounds.
Last year DBU finished 0-2 against A&M-Commerce with the Lions taking both contests at each venue. At Commerce, Texas, the Patriots dropped a thriller 91-87 overtime final. Both teams remained even at the end of both frames in regulation, and a 13-9 extra half decided the outcome.
Perry matched a team-high 19 points in the loss, while current senior,
Remy Ndiaye posted double digits in scoring with 10. Six DBU players on this year's squad saw significant minutes in that contest.
