Another Late Goal Helps Men's Soccer Finish in Tie

Box Score

The Dallas Baptist Men's Soccer Team finished its season with a 1-1 tie at University of Texas-Permian Basin on Monday afternoon. The double overtime stalemate was the first of the year for the Patriots (6-9-1, 4-4-1).

Senior Rodrigo Barrientos scored the only goal for DBU, and it came at the right time. The Carrolton, Texas, native has contributed four goals this season and all have come in huge moments for the team. This one knotted the score 1-1 at the 89:39 mark and kept the Patriot's season alive.

In its second season of the Heartland Conference, DBU improves its overall win total by two games and finishes .500 in conference matches thanks to the tie. Monday's results also locks the Patriots and UTPB (8-9-1, 4-4-1) in a tie for fourth in the final standings. The Heartland Conference doesn't host a tournament for Men's Soccer.

Sophomore Brian Robertson led DBU on offense with eight shots, three for on goal. Barrientos followed with six shots and two landed on goal. Junior David Balyeat and freshmen Seth Elliott and Riley Alvey created a trio of multi-shot attempts with two apiece. Balyeat was perfect with his 1.000 percent shots on goal.

As a whole, the Patriots outshot UTPB 22-16 and 9-7 for shots on goal. Regardless, the Falcons held the edge on the scoreboard 1-0 until the final minute of the contest.

Logan Sharp knocked in the goal for the opposition in the 73rd minute and counted as his third goal of the season.

It looked like enough for Texas-Permian Basin as the Patriots couldn't capitalize on opportunities down the stretch. Finally Alvey delivered a solid cross pass from the left side of the box that got chipped into the upper left corner of the net by Barrientos.

In the overtime periods, DBU gained the edge on shot attempts 4-2, including a pair counting for shots on goal. The final overtime period didn't present many chances as Barrientos took the lone shot in the 108th minute.

Mason Stringer (3-2-1) worked his longest career game with 110 minutes and faced 15 shots. The rookie allowed the one goal and recorded six saves.

Craig Branum (8-9-1) had a busy day in the net allowing a goal while picking up eight saves.
