Women's Soccer Moves to Semifinals with Shutout

Box Score

The Dallas Baptist Women's Soccer Team put together perhaps one of its best performances of the year, defeating the No.1-Seed Lee University 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon in the NCCAA National Tournament. With back-to-back victories in the tournament, DBU (16-6-1) has now won its last four in a row, and will look to build on the streak Friday in the Semifinals.

An offensive outburst lifted the Patriots early as the squad matched their highest scoring first half since a 4-0 win earlier in the campaign versus Oklahoma Christian. Sophomore Ashley Cox broke the tie in the second minute of the contest with her 10th goal of the year. Her classmate, Jolee Patterson picked up an assist on the sequence and aided Cox to be the second player to break the double-digit mark in scoring behind senior, Danielle Presley.

Presley concluded the scoring in the match, with her team-leading 16th goal occurring at the 36:15 minute mark. Junior Lea Sedwick set the goal up with a pass for a one-timer inside the box for the native of Flower Mound, Texas. The forward snapped her five-game scoring streak on Tuesday, but has tallied a goal in seven of the team's last nine contests, including six of seven in the postseason.

Junior Megan McDermand netted an unassisted goal, her second of the year, at the 13:07 mark to double the Patriot's advantage at the time.

"We played as a unit, were organized, and stretched their defense early with lots of offensive pressure, and also finished our chances," Head Coach Michelle Lenard stated. "This is probably the best game we have played all season."

Leading 3-0 at halftime, the Patriots also edged Lee University (14-4-2) in the first half 14-5 in shot attempts. In total for the game, DBU attempted more shots 18-11 and shots on goal, five-to-three.

Junior Kerry Edwards (16-6-1) recorded her personal best 15th shutout on the year, and now has 39 in her three-year starting career. It is the McKinney, Texas, native's fourth consecutive as she picked up three saves in 90 minutes.

The Lady Flames did get 11 shots, becoming the first offense to break double figures in shooting tries since Texas A&M-Commerce kicked 12 attempts 17 games ago.

"Our defense was solid shutting out a very high powered offense from Lee," Coach Lenard praised. "All in all it was a great game to be a part of."

Haley Gribler allowed all goals in a complete 90 minute slate, while also tallying two saves.

Cox paced DBU's offense with five shot attempts and two shots on goal for game-highs. Presley was right behind with four attempts. Sophomore Lindsey Eccles added three. Junior Jessica Salas and Sedwick completed the multi-shot group with a pair of attempts each.

A trio of players for the Lady Flames recorded multi-shot games. Summer Lanter led the way with four, followed by Leah Fortune with three, and Ode Fulutudilu added two total.

Coach Lenard believes her girls may be playing their best ball at the right time, especially after today's results. The six-year coach applauded, "The girls came out with a goal in mind and nothing was going to stop them today from being successful."
