Late Comeback Propels DBU Over Frogs

Box Score

For the 200th time in Head Coach Dan Heefner's head coaching career, the Dallas Baptist Patriots (14-11) notched a win – this time over crosstown foe TCU (9-15) with a 5-4 comeback win at Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth. Ten different DBU pitchers saw time on the mound and pitched around three DBU errors to allow only one earned run against the Horned Frogs before Paul Voelker picked up his third save of the season with a perfect ninth inning to protect the one-run lead. Patrick Hicks was credited with his first win of the season as the Patriots struck out six hitters on the night and allowed only six hits.

On the offensive side, DBU picked up seven hits – none bigger than Boomer Collins' two-out hit in the seventh inning to give the Patriots the lead after basically having nothing to show for their offensive output through five complete. DBU would do all their scoring in the fifth and sixth and it was enough to win their second straight game, and sixth in their last seven against TCU, ahead of conference play beginning Thursday.

TCU scored in three straight innings beginning in the third – thanks in part to three DBU errors – to take an early 4-0 lead. One error in each of the scoring innings led to a pair of runs in the third and single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. The Patriots did not record a hit off Seidenberger until the fourth inning when Michael Miller singled to centerfield. Miller's safety ended a nine-plus inning hitless streak for Seidenberger against DBU, dating back to the February 26 game at Horner Ballpark in which Seidenberger was lifted with a no-hitter intact through six innings.

The Patriots finally broke through on the scoreboard against Seidenberger in the sixth inning, with a little help from the Horned Frog defense. Much like the innings before for TCU, DBU took advantage of a couple fielding errors to produce their first run. Knight singled to open the inning and moved to third as Cody Jones, the TCU centerfielder, tried to throw behind him at first base and sailed the throw into the visitor dugout. Knight would score two batters later, after RJ Talamantes was hit by pitch, as Seidenberger tried to throw over to first and bounced the pickoff attempt past Derek Odell and into foul territory. With two outs, Collins singled to center to score Talamantes and the Horned Frog lead had been cut in half at 4-2.

DBU continued the offense in the seventh off two different TCU pitchers. Stefan Crighton began the inning for the Horned Frogs and was greeted by an Austin Listi double. Listi scored after a walk to Knight and two wild pitches cut the TCU lead to one and DBU would tie the score on a Garrido groundout – a play in which Garrido just beat out an inning-ending double play. Miller walked to move Garrido into scoring position and the Patriot leftfielder would give DBU their first lead of the night by scoring on a close play at the plate thanks to a Collins single to centerfield, his second hit and RBI on the night.

The DBU bullpen would make the one run lead stand up for the final three frames. Brandon Koch was outstanding in his 1.1 innings and Aaron Gilbreath and Michael Smith each recorded an out. For Smith, it was his 86th appearance in a DBU uniform, tying fellow righthanded reliever Stuart Sutherland's all-time appearance record.  Paul Voelker would enter in the ninth and record his third save with a perfect inning.

DBU will return to WAC play on Thursday night as they play host to Sacramento State on Easter Weekend. Jake Johansen is set to open the series at 6:30 at Horner Ballpark. All three games will have audio and video on dbupatriots.com/showcase.
