Final Two Innings Frustrate Patriots

Box Score

The Dallas Baptist Patriots (21-20) allowed five runs in the final two innings of their Tuesday night contest against Baylor (21-20) to fall to the Bears, 9-5. Patriot pitching allowed eight walks on the evening and two Patriot errors led to four unearned runs as Michael Smith (5-4) was handed the loss in his one inning of work. Boomer Collins led a Patriot offense that picked up three hits in the first inning and only four in the following eight at-bats. He collected three hits and an RBI.

Cory Taylor took a no-decision in his sixth start of the year and allowed one run on three hits in 2.1 innings of work. Blake Webster followed with two innings and struck out two before giving way to Joseph Shaw, who was great to tie his longest outing of the season. Shaw struck out four in 3.1 innings and allowed one run. Paul Voelker, Smith and Brandon Koch finished out the game for DBU on the mound in the loss.

DBU opened the scoring in the first as Boomer Collins and Michael Miller lined singles past Baylor starter, Sterling Wynn, into centerfield and stood at first and second with two outs. Justin Wall cleared the bases with a line drive triple to right centerfield to give the Patriots an early 2-0 lead. Baylor cut into that lead in the third as they scored a run on a walk, a hit, and a couple groundouts.

The Bears tied the score in the fourth as Blake Webster opened the inning with a strikeout of Adam Toth. The final pitch of the at bat was in the dirt, however, and Miller's thrown down to first sailed wide to allow Toth to second base where a double from Nate Goodwin chased him home with a double to even the score at two.

Baylor would give that run back in the fourth as Nash Knight worked a one out walk and Jaime Garrido followed by getting hit by pitch for the tenth time this season. After a balk, Collins singled through the left side to regain the Patriot lead at 3-2. That lead would last exactly one-half inning as Webster gave up a leadoff double in the fifth. Two hits and a fielder's choice later, with Joseph Shaw in for Webster, Baylor led for the first time in the contest, 4-3.

The lead would last until the sixth where the Patriots scored twice to retake the lead. Austin Listi singled to start the frame and moved to second as Knight singled. Both runners would cross the pay station on an infield groundout from Garrido and a Baylor wild pitch. Collins doubled and Mitchell walked with two outs but both were stranded to close out the inning.

From there, things fell apart for the Patriots. The loss is the fourth in the last five games for DBU. They will return to Western Athletic play on Friday as they welcome UT-San Antonio to Horner Ballpark. First pitch set for 6:30 pm.
