Relievers Help Shut Down Red Raiders

Box Score

On Tuesday night at Horner Ballpark, it seemed like there were two different games played between Dallas Baptist (18-15) and Texas Tech (17-18). The first took place over the first two innings when DBU scored seven runs and gave up nine and the second game was the final seven innings where DBU scratched out three runs while keeping the Red Raiders scoreless to hold on to a 10-9 win thanks in part to some outstanding relief pitching from three different righthanders. Blake Webster (2-1) was credited with the win and the work of Drew Smith and Joseph Shaw helped DBU to the win. Michael Smith picked up his second save of the season.

The Patriots opened a homerun barrage in the first inning after Michael Miller doubled and Boomer Collins singled. A wild pitch would score the first run of the game and Duncan McAlpine would drive home the next two as he deposited a long ball over the right centerfield fence off Tech starter Johnathan Tripp. Austin Listi then doubled and scored as Justin Wall picked up his 17th RBI of the season.

That four run lead would last until two outs in the second inning when Tech put up nine runs before the last out was finally recorded. DBU starter Jay Calhoun was tagged for seven of those runs and Patrick Hicks was charged with two after hitting a batter and giving up a homerun before inducing a ground ball out. DBU would quickly get three of those runs back in the bottom of the inning, including one on a leadoff homerun from KJ Alexander ahead of a sac fly from Collins and a McAlpine RBI single.

DBU tied the game with two more runs in the fourth – but not before Blake Webster pitched around the jam of all jams in the top of the inning. Much like Aaron Gilbreath on Sunday against New Mexico State, Webster was charged with keeping DBU in a game as he faced the bases loaded and nobody out in the top half of the inning. And much like Gilbreath, the senior righthander responded with three straight strikeouts, two looking and one swinging, to get DBU out of the scrape without harm.

A Miller double and a Listi single tied the game for DBU in the fourth and, in the fifth, a much more placid walk to Collins with the bases loaded gave the Patriots the lead at 10-9. From there, the story for DBU was the freshman righthander. Shaw threw 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball, beginning in the sixth inning, allowed two hits and struck out three. His longest collegiate outing - combined with one scoreless inning from Drew Smith, and the work of Webster - kept the Red Raiders scoreless for the final six innings before giving way to Michael Smith for the final two outs of the game.  With the tying run at third, Smith struck out both batters he faced and helped DBU to their second straight win, and first over Tech since May 3, 2011.

The Patriots will return to WAC play on Thursday as they play host to Seattle University beginning at 6:30 pm. Fans can catch all three games against Seattle on the Patriot Broadcasting Network at dbupatriots.com/showcase.
