Box Score
Needing a win to avoid a sweep at the hands of Louisiana Tech (18-34, 6-18), Dallas Baptist (26-26, 12-12) did just enough on offense to back up the superb pitching of righthander
Cody Beam, who went one batter past eight innings, not allowing a run on three hits, to pick up his fifth win of the season.
Ronnie Mitchell,
Michael Miller, and
Austin Listi each recorded two hits with Listi picking up a double and triple while scoring a run in the 5-0 DBU win.
The Patriots scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings with all RBI coming on sacrifice flies. In the first inning, after singles from
Boomer Collins and
Ronnie Mitchell, it was
Michael Miller who lifted a ball deep enough to centerfield to score the first run of the ballgame. In the second, Collins scored Chance Lynch with a flyball of his own and, in the fifth,
KJ Alexander got in the RBI column with a sacrifice fly to score
Austin Listi, who had led off the inning with a triple.
DBU scored two in the fifth with a little help from the Bulldogs. Miller led off with a single through the left side and moved to second as the Bulldogs were not able to turn a double play off the bat of
Duncan McAlpine. Miller would then score as a
Mike Wesolowski ground ball to short was thrown away for an error and, then, Wesolowski scored as Listi picked up his second extra-base hit with a double to leftfield to make the final score, 5-0.
Head Coach
Dan Heefner tried to let Beam finish the complete game shutout but, after a leadoff single in the ninth and 101 pitches, the righthander was lifted in favor of
Joseph Shaw. Shaw quickly recorded the final three outs of the game with a strikeout, a groundball, and a flyout.
Dallas Baptist has one weekend series left on the regular season, a three game set at Texas State, but will first travel for their final midweek game of 2013 as they head up I-35 to take on Oklahoma on Tuesday. First pitch in that game is set for 6:30 pm.
