Robertson's Late Goal Not Enough for Men's Soccer

Box Score

PORTALES, N.M. – A late penalty kick wasn't enough for Dallas Baptist Men's Soccer on Saturday afternoon, as the team dropped its fourth straight contest 2-1 in overtime at Eastern New Mexico. For the second straight game DBU (1-4) fell in overtime by the same score. ENMU (3-3-1) has won three of its last five.

The first score of the match occurred at the 56:54 mark by Kal Berbert for the Greyhounds. His fifth goal of the season came on a pass by Julian Roberts and beat the keeper to the right. It seemed like that would be enough until the 84th minute.

DBU, which took eight of its 16 shots in the second half, knotted the score with less than seven minutes remaining. Sophomore Brian Robertson delivered the key goal, first of his career, on a penalty kick. The game was tied 1-1 after regulation.

"We are proving each and every game that we are right there," Head Coach Chris Crawford stated. "The team just has to keep working and fighting harder each and every game."

Once again overtime would be needed to decide the outcome, and Jose Hernandez answered for ENMU at the 95:34 mark. Roberts recorded his second assist on the game-winner.

DBU was outshot 21-16 in the game, with Robertson taking a team-high four shots. Fellow sophomore Matthew Buckwalter and freshman Riley Alvey joined the Midlothian, Texas, native in placing two shots on goal. Sophomore Landon Lacy and Buckwalter contributed three shot attempts. Freshman Seth Elliot and Alvey added two shots.

Sophomore Chuck Schober (1-4) pulled in a season-high nine saves and allowed two goals in 95:34 minutes as goalkeeper. The McKinney, Texas, native has worked in all five games, where the Patriots are 1-3 in one goal games.

Severin Niessen (3-3-1) allowed one goal in full action in the net, while grabbing six saves.

Coach Crawford continued, "I am proud of the guys. We have battled this season with injuries, cards, and some other unlucky things, and the guys just keep rising to the challenge."

"This team has a lot of heart and fight and never quits," the second year coach praised. "I couldn't ask for more from a young team."

DBU's next game marks the first regular season home action for the Patriots this season. The game will take place Monday at 7 pm against Heartland foe McMurry University and will be the first of two games this year between the two teams.  Monday's game will count as a non-conference match.
