Duzenack Leads Patriots to Win Over MVSU

Box Score

Freshman Camden Duzenack made DBU baseball history, Saturday, knocking in nine runs in a 19-3 victory over visiting Mississippi Valley State University. The win moves the Patriots to 2-0 on the young season, dropping the Delta Devils to 0-2. The two clubs will meet in the series finale, Sunday at 1 p.m.

Mississippi Valley got on the board to open the contest, scoring an unearned run on a sacrifice fly by Xzavier Franklin, plating Kalik May. May walked to open the inning, stealing second and advancing to third when the throw from DBU catcher Daniel Salters deflected off May and rolled into left field.

DBU countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning, as Duzenack knocked a bases loaded double, scoring Daniel Salters and Nash Knight. The lead didn't last long however, as the Delta Devils pushed across single runs in both the third and fourth innings, taking a 3-2 lead.

Not to be outdone, Duzenack came to the plate with the bases loaded again in the fourth, drilling a Jonathan Parker pitch into left center field, clearing the bases with the double to take a 5-3 lead.

The Patriots broke things open in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring four runs, thanks in large part to yet another bases loaded double from Duzenack. DBU then added a single insurance run in the sixth, two in the seventh, and seven in the eighth, running the score to the eventual final, 19-3.

"Cam (Duzenack) has been doing an outstanding job," said DBU Head Coach, Dan Heefner, about his young second baseman. "He is an energy guy, his teammates love him, and he is a fun guy to watch."

The DBU newcomer's nine runs batted in ties the record for a single game at DBU, joining six other players, most recently current Patriot KJ Alexander in 2011. For the weekend, Duzenack is 8-for-9 with five doubles, 12 RBI, and six runs scored.

The DBU pitching staff turned in their second solid performance in as many days, with three pitchers combining to allow just one earned run. Cy Sneed (1-0) worked six innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits, while striking out six and walking two. Josh Urban came on to work the seventh and eighth innings without allowing a hit and striking out three. Jay Calhoun earned a pair of strikeouts in the ninth.

"It all starts with Cy (Sneed)'s experience," added the DBU skipper. "Even when he was young he had composure, but today after the start he settled in and did a good job."

Talamantes, Salters, and Alexander each earned a pair of hits in the Patriot 14-hit attack. Alexander was joined by Justin Wall with two RBI each. Trevin Sonnier led the home club with four runs scored, with Salters scoring three times, and Knight and Austin Listi each scoring twice.

MVSU tallied six total hits, two of them from Arrington Smith. The catcher stroked a double and scored one time. Xzavier Franklin had one hit and a sacrifice fly, leading the Delta Devils with a pair of runs batted in. Parker took the loss to fall to 0-1, allowing nine runs, six of them earned, on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.
