Knight's Grand Slam Propels Patriots Over BYU

Box Score

In a 3-3 tie between Dallas Baptist and BYU in the sixth inning, Nash Knight's grand slam homerun over the wall in right center field proved to be the game-winner in an 8-3 final.  Dallas Baptist (12-4) trailed 3-1 going into the bottom of the sixth before scoring six runs in the inning, highlighted by Knight's blast.

DBU took an early 1-0 lead over BYU (7-11) on a two-out, Daniel Salters double that plated Mike Wesolowski.  The Patriots would keep the 1-0 edge until the Cougars struck for two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth.

Patriot right-hander, Cory Taylor, had a career-day on the mound, tossing six innings and striking out a career-best nine.  The win is the first of 2014 for Taylor.  "This was probably Cory's best outing of the year.  It was very similar to his first start of the year against Grambling State, in which he was in complete control," DBU Head Coach, Dan Heefner said following the win.  "He had great command of his fastball, slider, and change-up and I was pleased with how he competed on the hill."

The Patriots' six-run sixth inning started with a single to right by David Martinelli that scored Austin Listi, drawing DBU to within one.  Two batters later, Trevin Sonnier tied the game with a bases loaded walk.  After Drew Turbin laced a ground ball off the pitcher and Martinelli was forced out at home, Knight followed with his blast to right.  "I thought Nash's approach was great in that at-bat.  It all started with the guys in front of him getting on and keeping the inning alive and he delivered when he got the chance," Heefner remarked.

After Sean Stutzman worked a scoreless seventh and eighth, Brandon Koch closed the door in the ninth with a pair of strikeouts.  Koch has now gone seven straight appearances and 10 consecutive innings without allowing a run.

DBU returns to the diamond on Friday when they begin a four-game road swing, starting with a three-game series at Missouri State.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 pm.

Following the team's trip to Springfield, Missouri, the Patriots travel to Austin next week for a Tuesday night game versus the Texas Longhorns.

Patriot fans can follow this weekend's action on the Patriot Broadcasting Network.  Game one of the series will be on the air at 2:35 with the pre-game show.
