DBU Handed Loss in Series Finale at Baylor

Box Score

With a chance to sweep the weekend series versus the Baylor Bears, the Dallas Baptist Baseball Team fell 7-4 on Saturday night at Baylor Ballpark.  Leading 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, a six-run inning gave the Bears all the offense they would need before turning the game over to one of the top closers in the nation, Josh Michalec.

For the third consecutive game, DBU (25-10) put runs on the board in the first inning, as David Martinelli and Austin Listi each collected RBI singles, giving the Patriots an early 2-0 lead.  Dallas Baptist would hold that two-run advantage until the bottom of the fourth when Baylor (16-19) scratched a run across the board in their half of the fourth on an RBI double from Aaron Dodson.

DBU starter, Cory Taylor, ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth.  Holding on to a 2-1 lead, Dodson led off the inning with a strikeout, but reached first on a wild pitch from Taylor.   A Mitch Price double put runners at second and third with no one out when Grayson Porter tied the game on a sacrifice fly to center field.
With Sean Stutzman called out of the Patriot bullpen, Baylor took their first lead of the day on a Brett Doe single up the middle.   Following a hit batter, Joseph Shaw was summoned from the pen.  Following a fielder's choice that loaded the bases, Adam Toth ripped a two-run single to left, giving the Bears a 6-3 lead.  One more run would cross the plate for Baylor in the inning on a Duncan Wendel RBI single.

The Patriots would tack on two more runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run single off the bat of Justin Wall, but that would be as close as DBU would come.  Baylor closer, Josh Michalec, who entered the night third in the nation in saves (11), worked 2.2 innings of shutout relief to close out the Patriots.

DBU returns to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon in Lubbock, Texas, against the Texas Tech Red Raiders.  The game will be the last in a five-game stretch versus Big 12 opponents.  First pitch is scheduled for 2 pm.
