Box Score The Dallas Baptist Baseball Team fell to the Texas Tech Red Raiders in walk-off fashion, losing 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Rip Griffin Park in Lubbock, Texas. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Texas Tech's ,Stephen Smith, singled to left to score two runs and send the Patriots home with just their second one-run loss of the season.
DBU (26-11) got on the board early, striking for four runs in their half of the third.
Mike Wesolowski put the Patriots on the board first by extending his season-high hit streak to 10 games on an RBI single to right that scored
Drew Turbin. Two batters later,
David Martinelli followed with a double to the left-center field gap that plated both
Justin Wall and Wesolowski. A
Nash Knight RBI base-hit completed the scoring for the Patriots in the third, giving DBU a 4-0 lead.
Patriot starter,
Drew Smith, was lifted in the fifth inning, after going four-plus innings and allowing three runs. Redshirt-senior,
Josh Urban, came out of the bullpen to shut down the Red Raider offense, holding Texas Tech scoreless over the next three innings.
Holding on to a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth,
Joseph Shaw came on in relief of Urban. Shaw retired the side in order in the home half of the eighth and took the hill in the ninth with a one-run lead.
After Shaw struck out the lead-off batter in the inning, Jake Barrios, the right-hander issued a one-out walk on a 3-2 pitch to Ryan Long. Devon Conley came out of the dugout to pinch-run for Long and would advance to third on an error by
Nash Knight at third.
Following an over the shoulder catch in shallow right by DBU second baseman,
Drew Turbin, Texas Tech was down to their final out. With runners on the corners, Anthony Lyons, who had reached base on the Knight error, stole second, putting the winning run in scoring position. Stephen Smith's line shot to right field on a 1-1 pitch scored both Conley and Lyons, and capped off a dramatic come from behind win for the Red Raiders.
The hit was Smith's second of the day and just the fifth Texas Tech base-hit on the afternoon. The Patriots racked up 10 hits on the day, including three from senior designated hitter,
KJ Alexander. DBU left 11 men on base on the afternoon.
The Patriots return to Horner Ballpark on Friday when they face Evansville in game one of a three-game series between the top two teams in the Missouri Valley Conference. The series will conclude on Saturday in a double-header, with game one starting at 1 pm. First pitch for Friday's game is scheduled for 6:30 pm.
