Box Score The DBU Patriot Baseball Team hosted the Texas Tech Red Raiders, Tuesday, dropping an 18-3 decision to the visitors at Horner Ballpark. With the non-conference loss, DBU drops to 31-17 overall.
The Patriots will look to move on quickly from the loss, with an important Missouri Valley Conference series ahead this weekend. DBU will travel to Wichita State, Friday, to begin a three-game series with the Shockers. The two clubs are currently tied for the third spot in the MVC standings.
The Red Raiders (37-16) broke open the scoring with four runs in the third, coming on an RBI single by Bryant Burleson and a two-run triple by Tyler Neslony, who scored on a wild pitch to start the next at bat. Tech doubled their lead in the fifth, as Eric Gutierrez hit a grand slam over the centerfield wall, extending the lead to 8-0.
Texas Tech broke things open from the sixth inning on, including home runs from Stephen Smith and Gutierrez, running their lead to 18-0 entering the bottom of the ninth inning.
DBU finally broke through in the ninth, scoring three runs, starting with
Daniel Salters, who capitalized on a pair of errors by first baseman Jake Barrios to score the Patriots' first run.
RJ Talamantes then stepped up and drilled a pitch into right center field, scoring
Austin Listi and
David Martinelli, running the score to the eventual final of 18-3.
The Patriots had six players with single hits, led by the two RBI from Talamantes.
Camden Duzenack,
Mike Wesolowski, and Salters all reached base twice, with the top three hitters in the DBU lineup each walking once.
Joseph Shaw (3-3) started and worked four innings on the mound for DBU, allowing four runs on four hits, striking out four and walking one.
Philip Orr was the Patriots' most effective reliever, allowing one hit and striking out two in the ninth inning.
Texas Tech was led by five hits from Anthony Lyons, with the freshman scoring three times. Gutierrez tallied six RBI with the two home runs and a run-scoring walk. Jonny Drozd (6-0) came on in the fifth inning, in relief of Dylan Dusek, allowing no runs on two hits, striking out three without allowing a walk.
