Patriots Win Game One Over Southern Illinois, 6-3

THE LEAD
No. 15 Dallas Baptist used a five-run sixth inning and a solid effort from Joseph Shaw on the mound to claim a 6-3 victory over Southern Illinois in game one of a three-game series at Itchy Jones Stadium in Carbondale, Illinois.  Shaw pitched into the eighth inning for the first time this year and struck out a season-high seven batters to earn improve to 7-2 on the season with the win.

Facing the Salukis' Chad Whitmer, who was making the first start of his career, DBU (30-9, 11-5) broke-up a scoreless game in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Chane Lynch.  Leading 1-0 into the sixth, a Daniel Sweet single into right with the bases loaded gave the Patriots a 3-0 advantage.  A double by Nash Knight plated two more runs to extend the lead to 5-0, while Drew Turbin capped off the five-run inning with a base knock to center that plated Knight.

On the mound, Shaw would stymie the Southern Illinois (10-33, 5-8) batting order for the first seven innings, before surrendering three runs in the bottom of the eighth.  Over his seven and two-third innings of work, the Patriots' ace scattered eight hits while walking just two.

With two outs and a runner at second, Drew Smith made his team-leading 18th appearance of the season and needed just one pitch to record a fly out to center and send the game to the ninth.  Smith would return in the final frame to retire the side in order and in the process, pick up his second save of the season.

DBU HEAD COACH, DAN HEEFNER – ON JOSEPH SHAW'S PERFORMANCE
"I thought he did a great job of pounding the strike zone on a night when he didn't have the most velocity on his fastball.  I think he's better at times when his velocity isn't at its best because he does a really good job of using his off-speed stuff and tonight he had great command of his slider to both sides of the plate."

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
105 – First time this year that Joseph Shaw has gone over 100 pitches in an outing.
2 – Number of extra-base hits tonight, as each team had one double.
4 – Patriots with multi-hit games (Chane Lynch, Daniel Salters, Daniel Sweet, and Drew Turbin)
