THE RUNDOWN
On Sunday, No. 1 DBU advanced to the South Central Regional Finals with a 2-0 win over West Texas A&M. The Patriot defense smothered the Lady Buffs, conceding no on-target shots in the second half while goals from Haley Roberson and Madison Parks made DBU (17-1-1) one of just three schools in the country to reach the Sweet 16 every year since 2018.
The WT (14-4-4) defense presented problems in the early going. The Lady Buffs limited trips into the box and forced the Patriots to settle for deep shots. Possession was controlled by West Texas midway through the half before DBU saw a sliver of light in the 40th minute that changed the direction of the match. Rachel Allen delivered a beautiful pass in transition to Jacqueline Wiebe. Wiebe immediately knifed a pass to Joeli Benson that was then placed on the foot of Roberson for a 1-0 goal that cut through the heart of the West Texas defense.Â
DBU returned to the pitch even more dominant in the second half. All-conference forwards Asha James and Maria-Frances Serrant were silenced the rest of the way for a WT offense that mustered no shots on goal in the second half. DBU also limited the Lady Buffs to a single corner chance while taking four themselves. The depth of coach Wood's roster was on display deep in the match as Madison Parks checked into the game and quickly netted a goal on an assist from Michelle Gonzalez "Marta." Fresh legs and disciplined defense would seal the win for DBU in the final game  at Patriot Field.Â
