THE RUNDOWN
The San Diego Toreros walked off DBU 9-8 Friday at Fowler Park in San Diego, California. A four-spot in the third inning put the Patriots in front for most of the day before a three-run double off the bat of Kevin Sim, who drove in seven runs, rallied the Toreros (5-3) and put San Diego in control of the weekend series.Â
DBU (4-5) looked poised to take game one in the top of the ninth. Walks from Nate Rombach and Jace Grady snowballed with a Luke Heefner single to load the bases and placed San Diego's James Sashin in a pivotal jam with a 7-6 lead and nobody out. But Ryan Robinson entered the game to clean things up for the Toreros and allow just one run on a wild pitch.Â
Down 8-6 in their half of the inning, a walk, a single, and a wild pitch put the go-ahead run on the basepaths for San Diego. Kevin Sim then laced his fifth hit of the day into left field and cleared the bases to hand DBU its second one-run loss in as many games.
A two-run homer off the bat of Sim gave San Diego a 2-0 lead in the second inning. But, once again, DBU would mount an immediate response. Blayne Jones put the Pats on the board with an RBI single with the bases loaded. From there, Cole Moore drove in two runs with a base hit into left field, and Jones scored when he crossed home before Moore was tagged out in a rundown to wrap-up a four-run frame.Â
Another two-run blast by San Diego, this time from Caleb Ricketts answered a solo shot from Andrew Benefield to make it a 5-4 ballgame. DBU then extended their lead to three off the bat of Blayne Jones when the fifth-year senior crushed a pitch over the left field wall to give the Patriots a 7-4 cushion in the seventh inning.Â
Despite an eight-run, eight-hit performance from the DBU bats, five runs in the final two frames would lift the Toreros to the game one win.Â
