THE RUNDOWN
DBU finished out the 2022 home schedule with a series-clinching 11-4 win over Evansville on Sunday afternoon at Horner Ballpark.Â
Cole Moore had a career day, hitting three home runs and driving in six.
The Patriots (33-18, 11-7) exchanged runs with Evansville (29-20, 13-5) early on, with three ties and three lead changes through the first four innings. The Aces jumped out in front in the opening frame for the second consecutive day, pushing a run across on a Brent Widder single through the right side. DBU answered with a run in the bottom of the first, as
Miguel Santos notched a leadoff double and advanced to third before
Cole Moore singled him home.
After Chase Hug connected on a two-run home run to left, the Pats responded with two more of their own to pull even in the home-half of the second.
Luke Heefner knocked in a base hit and
Nate Rombach walked to set the table for a Nate Humphreys RBI double. Rombach would then score on a Santos groundout in the next at-bat.
After a scoreless third inning on the mound from
Luke Eldred,
Cole Moore gave DBU its first lead of the afternoon on a solo shot to right center field. Evansville rallied with a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-4 ballgame before the Patriots took control.
Miguel Santos led off the fifth by crushing an 0-1 offering 432 feet to left, and then
Ryan Wrobleski singled before
Cole Moore launched his second home run off of the scoreboard in right to give DBU a 3-run advantage.
Following six innings of work from
Luke Eldred,
Tyler Schott entered and promptly struck out both batters he faced.
Santos completed his fifth three-hit game of the season with a double to start the bottom of the seventh inning.
Jace Grady grounded him over to third, and then Wrobleski brought him home on a single to left. Moore then capitalized on a 4-4 day at the plate with his third home run, this time sending the ball over the batter's eye in center field.
The Patriots added a final run in the eighth when
Luke Heefner scored on a wild pitch.Â
After 1.1 innings from
Ryan Johnson,
Kyle Amendt took the mound in the ninth and induced consecutive groundouts.
Peyton Sherlin then entered for what might have been his final time at Horner Ballpark, striking out Mark Shallenberger to end the game.
