THE RUNDOWN
No. 1 DBU breezed past Texas Woman's, 2-0, on a brisk fall night at Patriot Soccer Field. A two goal performance from Annie Severide powered the Patriots to victory while the defense forced its fourth shutout of the year. DBU improves to 7-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 in conference play under first-year coach Marcus Wood as the Pioneers tumble to 1-6-3 through their first 10 games.Â
It was Annie Severide who scored the go-ahead goal and Severide who added insurance in the second half. Coach Wood spoke prior to the game about the team's need to capitalize on set pieces; he got his wish in the fifth minute when a Michelle Gonzalez "Marta" corner kick careened off Rachel Allen and connected with the foot of Severide for the game's first goal.Â
Severide put more separation between the Patriots and a pesky TWU squad early in the second half. In the 57th minute, Angelina Olmos swiped the ball off a Pioneer and began her charge into the attacking third of the field. The young freshman then slid a no-look pass to a bolting Severide that gave DBU a 2-0 lead that would remain unchallenged the rest of the game.Â
