THE RUNDOWN
DBU (6-2) defeated Wilmington (1-7) in its last game of the Steel City Showcase in Pueblo, Colorado on Saturday evening. The Lady Patriots finished the weekend undefeated in their four games.
The DBU offense was clicking early. Back-to-back aces by
Aryn Walton and kills by a front line composed of
Delaney Fuller,
AJ Koele, and
Abby Phillips forced a Wilmington timeout with the Lady Patriots leading, 13-5. The Wildcats were getting better footing, but a five-point run by the Lady Patriots, including three straight kills by Phillips and a block by
Lauryn Burt and
Lindsey Otero, put the momentum back in favor of DBU—all the way to a 25-13 set win for the Lady Patriots.
Â
Wilmington took the leverage to begin set two, jumping to a 5-2 lead. With a tie at seven, DBU went on a six-point surge, with Fuller and Otero showing off their length by garnering back-to-back assisted blocks. DBU widened the margin to as many as eight, 17-9, and took the second set, holding the Wildcats to a dismal .036 hitting.
Â
Both teams struggled to pull ahead in the third frame. Through the first 20 points, the score was knotted, 10-10. The Lady Patriots battled to gain a 19-14 advantage before a timeout was called by Wilmington. Fuller propelled DBU to win the closing set, tagging seven kills, her most in any set this season, while registering one assist, one ace, and one dig.
