THE RUNDOWN
DBU was defeated by Texas A&M International on Saturday afternoon in Laredo, Texas. The Lady Patriots are now 6-2 against Lone Star Conference opponents.
After a nearly even start to the match, TAMIU (13-6, 5-2) forced a DBU (13-6, 6-2) timeout in response to a 5-2 stretch. Down 15-11, the Lady Patriots struggled to slow the pace of the Dustdevlils, who widened the margin as far as 21-13. DBU began to close the gap in the last moments of the first frame, but TAMIU took the set 25-20.
The Lady Patriots found their rhythm in the second. A diverse offense kept DBU ahead in all but the first six points of the set.
Karly Wells and
Delaney Fuller combined for nine kills, and the Lady Patriots evened the set count without committing an attack error in the frame.
Vying for an important third-set win, the Dustdevils jumped to a quick 10-5 lead. They increased their advantage to as many as eight, 19-11, but DBU went on a 9-4 run to narrow the gap to 23-20. The Lady Patriots forced TAMIU to play four extra set points, but the Dustdevils' Emma Lade delivered a kill to put her squad ahead in the match 2-1.
Tied 10-10 to begin the fourth, TAMIU pulled away with a five-point stint. The momentum stayed with the Dustdevils from there, as they finished the match by winning the frame.
