THE RUNDOWNÂ
The DBU Men's Soccer Team battled to a 1-1 tie against No. 24 St. Mary's on Saturday night at Patriot Soccer Field. The Patriots were just 38 seconds away from claiming their first win over a nationally ranked opponent when St. Mary's Gael Gallegos delivered the equalizer. Â
The first half proved to be a fast-paced and physical battle that ended in a scoreless tie. Both teams attempted four shots with DBU making one shot on goal. Â
The fast pace of the game continued into the second half as both teams scrambled for possession. In the span of nine minutes, the Patriots totaled six corner-kick opportunities. On the sixth set-piece opportunity, freshman Evan Pustejovsky bent a shot over the sea of blue jerseys and connected with Peyton Voelker who headed the ball into the net in the 58th minute to put the Patriots up 1-0.Â
For the next 31 minutes, DBU's defensive line of Dominic Verdi, Andrew Hollenbach, Dylan Berry, and Ethan Michael held the Rattlers off. In a burst of urgency, St. Mary's fired three shots in the final minute, with the last resulting in the equalizing goal by Gael Gallegos assisted by Cian Foley and Gero Wolters to end the match with a 1-1 draw. Â
The Patriots add one point to their Lone Star Conference standings. They currently sit in eighth place with six points. Â
